Question by : What would a native call Saint Petersburg?
I’m talking about the Russian city, btw.
If you lived in Saint Petersburg, would you call your city “Saint Petersburg,” “Petersburg,” or “Piter”?
Also, on Wikipedia, it says that Saint Petersburg is often referred to as just “Petersburg” or “Piter.” I was wondering if those (specifically “Piter”) are just shortened terms with no connotation, or if they carry some sort of pejorative connotation or something?
Lastly, if I were writing a report, could I call it “St. Petersburg,” or do I have to write out the “Saint” in it?
Best answer:
Answer by Dude
Yes, if you were doing a report, you would have to say “St. Petersburg”, as it’s the official name of the city.
Well, you could just say Leningrad if you seem to have this much of a problem with writing in “Saint”. After all, that’s what it used to be called, and a lot of Russians still call it that.

In Brandee Nielsens new autobiography, Unforgotten (published by WestBow Press), she tells her life story, from her pleasant Catholic early childhood in Glendale Queens, New York, to living under the shadow of her mothers alcohol abuse, to striking out on her own in Florida.
At the early age of five, Nielsen believed she was visited by angels in recurring dreams, inspiring her to find her voice and write her first song while day-dreaming about God and helping other children less fortunate in the world. By seven, her world and her dreams were quickly unraveled when her mother was clenched by addiction to alcohol and never returned sober again.
This turn of events thrusts Nielsen down an unguided path that leads to life-altering, and life-threatening experiences through her adolescent years, locked in an internal world of fear and isolation, emotional neglect, academic failure and embarrassment while surrounded by family addictions and other emotional dysfunctions.
Eventually finding balance, she unexpectedly rejects her belief in a higher power and darts down a self-centered course of indulgence and vanity. She becomes caught in the grip of her own addictions suffering extreme betrayal, codependency, domestic abuse and violence, keeping it all hidden beneath the surface where on top, she wears a mask painted with confidence, balance and success.
Finding herself standing at the edge of the same pool of alcoholism that drowned her mother, she is met by the Holy Spirit who reveals her distant faith wherein her early childhood dreams are unforgotten. She is given a choice to grasp the hand of recovery and live a life of true purpose.

Question by dopplerhd: The status quo of RUSSIA? How are the russians doing?
So im doing a story with a russian protagonist, an ambitious feat considering i have never met a pure russian native before and I have never been to russia. No fret. I still have 12 more months of research to do.
Anyway here are my questions and i hope some of you take time in answering them:
1.) AFTER THE COLLAPSE OF USSR, is the situation in moscow really that bad? Does it really merit its reputation as “one of the worst cities in the world” (http://www.mn.ru/society/20100527/187846292.html)
2.) Compare the urban life of Moscow/St. Petursburg to that of Singapore, New york and London (No biases please. I’m not from any of these places) When i search “moscow” or “saint petersburg” on google i keep on getting the church on spilled blood or similar “old” structures. I cant really find “modern” cityscapes (i.e skyscrapers, modern buildings etc.). Is it safe to say that moscow/st petersburg lags behind majors cities in terms of industrial infrastructure/ architecture?
3.) Since about 60million russians are below poverty line, would i expect many beggars on the streets? When I go to russia, will i immediately think “oh this is a poor country so many poor people” ( although we know it is a powerful country because of its resources).
4.) russia is home to the most number of billionaires. But are they the kind of rich people that some people call “eurotrash”. Like they’re not really as classy as the Vanderbilts or the WIndsors- they just have a lot of money?
5.) How is education in Russia? I have read many studies or scientific experiments that have been done in russia? I thought of them as very advanced in technology/ weaponry. However, it seems only one of their universities made it as one of the best universities in the world. How is this so?
6.) this is a very subjective question: Is russia, after the collapse of USSR, a beautiful place to live in? why?
I DON’T WANT ANSWERS FROM HATERS OR EXTREME PATRIOTS (of whatver race). I’m asking these questions for INFORMATION. So please answer with as much objectivity as possible. My perceptions are based on what I have read, heard and seen so i hope no one takes offense with my questions.
