Question by : What would a native call Saint Petersburg?
I’m talking about the Russian city, btw.
If you lived in Saint Petersburg, would you call your city “Saint Petersburg,” “Petersburg,” or “Piter”?
Also, on Wikipedia, it says that Saint Petersburg is often referred to as just “Petersburg” or “Piter.” I was wondering if those (specifically “Piter”) are just shortened terms with no connotation, or if they carry some sort of pejorative connotation or something?
Lastly, if I were writing a report, could I call it “St. Petersburg,” or do I have to write out the “Saint” in it?

Yes, if you were doing a report, you would have to say “St. Petersburg”, as it’s the official name of the city.
Well, you could just say Leningrad if you seem to have this much of a problem with writing in “Saint”. After all, that’s what it used to be called, and a lot of Russians still call it that.
